Liz Seabrook - North Norway / Fare

Delighted to share a small selection of these breathtakingly beautiful images, captured by Liz Seabrook for her recent book, “North Norway: Seasons of Sun and Snow” published by Fare Folk.

“Shot entirely using natural light and spanning every season, from golden autumn days to deep winter darkness… the book spans four years and over a thousand miles, spotlighting both the individual human-led stories as well as the stunning drama of the landscape as it changes throughout the year.”

Capturing the spirit of a place through images and story-telling, Liz embraced every aspect of the life in the far north: free-diving with scallop divers off the coast of Seløy, gathering flowers for garland-making on midsummer eve, sinking into the traditional ways of life with Sámi reindeer herders, and capturing the stories of the fjordland growers, alongside the chefs specialising in regional cuisine, the artisans and the fisherfolk who dwell in these remote northern communities.

And a poem quoted in the book that we thought was too lovely not to include here.

“I am to describe how our Nordland is seen,
With mountains and ocean and shoreline between,
With farms and with attributes many.
I write of the rocks and the peaks up above,
Old, troll-like and grey, with hard snow on the domes,
Of hills and of rivers and valleys;
How farmers a livelihood make here up north,
What food and what drink they set forth on the board,
And many another true feature.
Such writing, if it does not satisfy thirst
Or hunger, may give you a moment of mirth;
What more can this author you promise?”

From The Trumpet of Nordland by Petter Dass, translated by Theodore Jorgenson
