Liz Seabrook - In Studio - Cat Spillman and Emilie Van Camp for Koji - plus Grain & Knot, Laurence Alice Johns and Valentine Benoist

Photographer Liz Seabrook if often to be found immersed in capturing the inspiration and working practices of artists and creators in their studios…

Recently, she visited Sophie Sellu, aka Grain & Knot ‘s beautiful studio - “even though it sits alongside an a road, as soon as you step into the workshop, all of the London bustle is left behind among the soft wooden shapes that Sophie creates. Talismans with faces, wiggles of wood and brushes that turn out to be as useful as beautiful, it’s hard not to want to take everything home. I love going through the stacks of wood she has and admiring the spalting like veins etched through the planks”.

Koji magazine commissioned LIz to photograph American born abstract artist Cat Spillman at work in her home/studio in London. Her paintings invite “slow looking and reflection”, capturing “fleeting inner states and moments of stillness”.

Liz shot another beautiful commission for Koji, featuring ink watercolorist / Japanese craft curator Emilie Van Camp, who opened the door to her world of dark inks and elegant brush-strokes.

Earlier this year, Liz also visited Lauren Alice Johns, an artist with Bajan and Irish roots, whose work explores the Caribbean diaporic identity.

And ceramicist Valentine Benoist in her home studio. “Her ceramics are inspired by, influenced by and even include elements of the Brittany coastline. As a stone collector, I was instantly drawn to her fascination with the geology of the landscape she's recently been spending more time in.”
