Phil Fisk - Observer / Ted Westfallen
Observer commissioned Phil Fisk to capture these wonderful portraits of one of Francis Bacon’s last living subjects, Ted Westfallen.
A bouncer and former meat market porter from the East End of London, Westfallen was the model for a painting, “Study for Portrait”, painted by Bacon in 1969. The identity of the sitter had been a 50 year art history mystery, only recently resolved by chance, when the sitter’s son spotted a poster for the exhibition, “Francis Bacon: Human Presence“ at the National Portrait Gallery…
Phil spent a couple of hours with him and was, “bombarded with anecdotes and stories both funny and scary, libellous, hilarious and unfortunately not repeatable here, but I shall be recounting them for years to come.”
