Liz Seabrook - Fare / Athens

Liz Seabrook captures the spirit, community and colour of football culture in Athens for the latest issue of Fare Magazine, exploring the city's rich connections between food, people and place.

"I don't know a lot about football, but I love it when people are really passionate about something. Especially when they do a show and tell.

We arranged to photograph Panathinaikos goalkeeper Zoi Nasi and forward Grigoria Pouliou at Panellinion Café in Athens. Our fixer and writer, Akis Katsoudas - a devoted fan himself - knew it as something of an informal clubhouse for supporters in the neighbourhood.

When we arrived, Mr Giannis, the owner, started pulling out flags, shirts and scarves, draping them around the café until every corner was awash in clover green. The players - gracious, delighted and perhaps just a little overwhelmed - watched the transformation unfold, still seemingly unaccustomed to what it means to represent the club after two years.”

The result is a series of warm, characterful portraits that celebrate not only the game itself, but the people and places that give it meaning.
